The RESPeRATE device is a small computerized module that uses soothing music and tones to help people breathe slowly and lower their blood pressure. The device has three components: a little computerized module, standard earphones, and a chest strap holding a breath sensor. Patients wear the chest strap and listen to the music through the earphones, which play tones that represent their actual breathing. They are instructed to match their breathing to the tones, which gradually slow until they reach a relaxing rate of 10 breaths per minute. The study involved 149 patients with high blood pressure, who were randomly assigned to use either the RESPeRATE device or a home blood-pressure monitor without any instructions about using the device. The results showed that nearly everyone who got the RESPeRATE device was able to use it correctly, and those who used it frequently achieved a 15-point drop in blood pressure. The study's findings suggest that the RESPeRATE device may be effective for lowering blood pressure in people with high blood pressure. However, experts warn that it should not be used as a replacement for medical treatment, but rather as a complementary tool for stress reduction and relaxation.
